Lahore—The Punjab government is committed to implement the directives of Supreme Court of Pakistan regarding widening of Canal Road.

A spokesman of the Punjab government said that Chief Secretary Punjab was supervising the activities of the departments concerned to ensure that the directives of Supreme Court are implemented in letter and spirit.

He said that on the directives of Chief Secretary, the Additional Chief Secretary, Punjab convened a meeting on September 28, of the departments concerned associated with the project and chalked out a comprehensive action plan to take care of each and every aspect of the directives of the Apex Court during implementation process.

The spokesman said that the Supreme Court in its judgment had directed the government that every tree cut should be replaced by four trees of 6/7 feet. However, the Chief Minister Punjab directed PHA to plant ten trees instead of four to address the environment concerns and the Director General PHA has already commenced the plantation.

He said that a committee under Secretary Housing has been constituted to make a comprehensive plan to stop throwing of litter and discharge of any pollutant in the canal. He said that City District Government has also been tasked to strictly enforce their regulations and impose due penalties in case of any violations. He said that the committee has been directed to put up its recommendations within fifteen days.

The spokesman said that the government was dedicated to execute the project in the light of the recommendations of the Mediation Committee duly approved by the Honourable Supreme Court.

He said that necessary directives to this effect were passed on to the departments in the meeting of September 28 held by the Additional Chief Secretary. Committees have also been constituted under respective Secretaries to cater to traffic arrangements and effective public transport system on the Canal Road in the light of directions of the Supreme Court, the spokesman concluded.
