LAHORE (Agencies) - Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza said on Sunday the PPP-led coalition government has always consulted all political forces on major national issues and succeeded in building a consensus national policy.
He was talking to Punjab Governor Sardar Latif Khan Khosa, who called on him at his residence in DHA on Sunday. MPA Syed Mujtaba Gilani and Syed Ali Musa Gilani were also present. During the meeting, they discussed overall political and security situation in the country.
The Prime Minister said the government was pursuing a policy of reconciliation and respected the public mandate of each party. He said the government, while upholding the supremacy of Parliament, was ensuring respect of all institutions. “We are determined to strengthening democratic institutions in the country,” he added.
Gilani said that the recent marathon joint session of the Parliament and a consensus national policy speak volumes about the political maturity of Pakistan’s leadership.
Since inception of this government, he said, the Armed Forces briefed the Parliament for the second time, and this time it apprised the parliamentarians about the Abbottabad incident and faced probing questions on the issue.
The Prime Minister directed the Governor that there should be no political instability in the province of Punjab.
On this occasion, the Governor said that briefing from the Armed Forces on such an issue was unprecedented and vividly showed that democracy in Pakistan was now on right track after a long political struggle against dictatorship. He said the passage of the resolution unanimously by the 442 members of the joint session was a great victory of the present government, adding supremacy of the Parliament was established in this way.
The Governor commended the matchless leadership of Prime Minister Gilani to steer the joint session towards a consensus resolution that brought the nation out of crisis. Sources said the prime minister during the meeting emphasized the need for maintaining working relationship with all the political parties and avoiding any confrontation in the province. He said the country cannot afford confrontation particularly in the present critical situation.
He also stressed ensuring law and order and timely completion of the development schemes.
