The governing body of the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has approved acquisition of 35 kanals land for a new fruit and vegetable market.

The district co-ordination officer and LDA chairman, Ahad Khan Cheema, chaired the governing body meeting of LDA which was attended by acting LDA director general Hafiz Ihsan Ul Haq, additional director general (Housing) Mansoor Qadir, WASA managing director Dr Javed Iqbal and representatives of the provincial local government, housing, planning and development and finance departments besides administrators of the nine constituent towns of Lahore district.

LDA officials said the decision was taken after the Punjab agriculture department had decided to shift Fruit and Vegetable Market, Kot Lakhpat, Ferozepur Road, Lahore. They added that the Market was established on 100 kanals land as a part of the LDA scheme known as the Model Town Extension Housing Scheme.

The Land for Model Town Extension Housing Scheme was purchased by the LDA from the Model Town Society in 1978.

The Fruit & Vegetable Market has become a source of pollution as well as traffic congestion on the main Ferozepur Road.

The matter has been discussed at different levels of the government, and it has been decided to make arrangement for shifting of fruit and vegetable market.

Lahore Development Authority officials maintained that, after shifting of the market, the land allotted to the shop keepers, market committee, etc, needed to be acquired to eliminate the source of pollution.

Meanwhile, in compliance with the orders of the Supreme Court, the governing body had also granted administrative approval for an amount of Rs.52 million for external electrification of Venus Housing Scheme at Ferozepur Road Lahore in the interest of public.

The amount will be recovered after auctioning 81 plots, mortgaged with Lahore Development Authority by the sponsor of the scheme, as guarantee for development works.
