LAHORE: The Christian community and other citizens of the city organised special prayers for the martyred Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer in churches and other places on Sunday.

Minority Affairs Minister and All Pakistan Minorities Alliance (APMA) Chairman Shahbaz Bhatti had declared Sunday a ‘prayer day’ to pay tribute to the late governor, who had sacrificed his life fighting for the rights of the minorities.

The largest ceremony was held at the Cathedral Church on Mall Road, which was led by Lahore Bishop Dr Alexander John Malik. A number of Christians participated in the ceremony. Minorities leaders condemned the brutal murder of Taseer in their addresses and declared the assassination a big loss to the country, especially for the minorities. They also declared the late governor ‘Shaheed-e-Haq’ in their speeches. The speakers said that religious extremists had tried to suppress the voice of the minorities living in Pakistan. They said that extremists were trying to stifle their voices through this step because Taseer had always supported the minorities.
