Keeping outsiders at bay: Defence Housing Authority trying to ‘colonise’ schools?

* New policy to be implemented from next academic session
*DHA spokesman says outsiders not banned, but residents come first

By Afnan Khan

LAHORE: The Defence Housing Authority (DHA) administration will prefer to admit children of DHA residents in its public schools, DHA administration officials told Daily Times on Saturday.

They said that the decision had been made for the first time, and a notice regarding the new policy was issued a few weeks ago. They said that the authority used to admit children on open merit, but the residents had complained that some of their children could not make it to the DHA schools due to massive competition.

They said that the administration had now made it compulsory for its schools to give priority to the children of its members, and accommodate others if they had some seats left.

Resident first: DHA spokesperson Tajamul Hussain told Daily Times that the authority had not banned admissions to outsiders, but only made a policy to facilitate its members.

He said that the DHA was an independent authority, and reserved the rights to make rules for the betterment of its residents.

According to the information gathered, five schools are being run by the DHA administration in Sectors S, W, R, T and Z. The educational institutions in the DHA include two primary schools for boys and girls, a high school, a higher secondary school, and a degree college for women. The boys high school entertains both A and O Level students along with matriculation and intermediate students. A large number of students living in Cantonment and Gulberg, and on Walton Road, are studying at DHA schools. The rules also state that children of the tenants in DHA will also be entertained before the outsiders, provided they present the proof that they were living in the DHA.
