WASHINGTON: The Pakistan Embassy in the US has finalised all arrangements with the New York Police Department to take possession of the body of Ali Ayaz Fakhri, the embassy said on Friday.

The embassy was waiting for Fakhri’s brother Shahbaz, who lives in Canada, “and as soon as he arrives, we will go ahead with our arrangements,” one embassy official said.

The embassy was earlier expecting the deceased’s father, Jamil Fakhri, to come from Pakistan but was later informed that he had asked Shahbaz Fakhri to coordinate the arrangements with the embassy staff.

Earlier this week, embassy officials told reporters that US police officials were treating Ali Fakhri’s death as a murder.

Police informed the embassy that “some unknown people had dismembered the body before putting it in his cab and setting the vehicle on fire,” an embassy official said.

A New York Police Department official also confirmed that the DNA of the body parts, recovered from the car, matched with the DNA they had received from the Fakhri family, which led to the conclusion that Ali Fakhri was dead.
