Reforms committee accepts all SC recommendations
* Rabbani says sub-committee formed to finalise proposed draft
LAHORE: The constitutional reforms committee accepted the Supreme Court’s recommendations pertaining to judges’ appointment, a private TV channel reported on Friday.
In the meeting, headed by Senator Raza Rabbani, all suggestions from the Supreme Court had been accepted and approved. According to sources, the recommendations would be presented before the National Assembly by December 22. The meeting also decided that four senators would be working in the parliamentary committee in the absence of the National Assembly.
The meeting advised that the judicial commission’s recommendations for judges’ appointment first be approved by the parliamentary committee, after which the prime minister would forward it for the president’s approval. In case the committee rejected the nominations, it would send back the names to the judicial commission via the PM. The parliamentary body also proposed that it would have to give concrete suggestions in case of rejection of the nominated judges, the channel said.
Rabbani said that a sub-committee had also been formed to finalise the proposed draft in light of the reforms committee’s recommendations. A meeting of this sub-committee would be convened on Tuesday, he added. Members of the sub-committee include Rabbani, Senator Ishaq Dar, Senator Afrasiab Khattak, Senator Waseem Sajjad and Syed Naveed Qamar. Rabbani also said that the committee was considering the matter for the appointment of judges, whether by a separate resolution or making it part of the 19th Amendment – likely to be presented in the National Assembly’s December 22 session.
