KARACHI (Agencies) – The world’s largest ship-based power plant has arrived off the Karachi coast to try to mitigate the country’s chronic electricity shortages.
Orient Power spokesman Asad Mahmood said the ship will generate about 230 megawatts. Orient Power and the ship’s Turkish owner Karkey Karadeniz Electrik have a five-year contract with the Pakistani national power company for an undisclosed amount.
Asad said on Friday the ship is anchored off Karachi and will begin feeding into the national grid within four weeks.
However, the new supply still won’t come close to ending power shortages that cause rolling blackouts, cripple manufacturing and increase widespread public frustration with the government.
Federal Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervez Ashraf in this regard said that Turkey has prepared this power plant with sincerity and it has been given the name of Power of Friendship. He said that with the power plant becoming operational the loadshedding in Karachi would be considerably reduced.
