ISLAMABAD – The National Assembly on Friday passed ‘The West Pakistan Regulation and Control of Loudspeakers and Sound Amplifiers (Amendment) Bill, 2007" setting one-year imprisonment for the misuse of loudspeakers.
Minister of State for Interior Tasneem Qureshi presented the bill in the Lower House and termed it necessary to control sectarianism, which has been resulting in law and order situation in the country.
He said, in the amendment bill the imprisonment was extended for a term not exceeding one year or with fine, which may extend to Rs50,000 or with both. The law will only be implemented in the territory of the Federal Capital, he said.
“The bill would prevent the misuse of the loudspeakers and amplifiers. Various religious leaders belonging to different sects use loudspeakers for propaganda resulting in violence among different sects. To curb this violation it is mandatory to enhance the punishment”, Minister for State for Interior added.
Earlier, PML-N MNAs including Zahid Hamid, Malik Pervaiz and Anusha Rehman moved amendment in the bill whose certain points were accepted.
During the discussion, an exchange of hot words also took place between Anusha Rehman and Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi when Anusha said that Deputy Speaker did not allow women parliamentarians to speak and she had been neglected for the last two days.
“We elected you as a Deputy Speaker. Don’t you want to be elected in future”, she asked to which Kundi responded, “You come to the House once in a blue moon”.
Later, responding to a calling attention notice regarding corruption of bank employees and middlemen in the issuance of Watan Cards to the flood affectees, Minister of State for Interior said that NADRA issued the cards while following the lists of the provincial governments.
The ministry has already directed FIA to take action against those involved in misuse of Watan Cards, he told the House.
