KARACHI: The City District Government Karachi (CDGK) has completed the Bacha Khan flyover and would open it for public as soon as the provincial government provides Rs 700 million for construction of link roads around the much delayed project.

Around two million people would benefit from the flyover, located in the limits of three town municipal administrations including Orangi Town, SITE Town and North Nazimabad Town, which has taken three years to be completed.

The CDGK has sent the PC-I summary to the provincial government for sanctioning the required funds to complete pending development works, which has been approved and the funds would be released shortly, Daily Times learnt from reliable sources.

The provincial government had deferred the flyover’s construction for a year which led to the revision of PC-I cost for the third time, causing the estimate to increase four folds. The reasons for the delay included the area’s law and order situation, lack of funds, shifting of electric poles and high-tension cables, and the underground water and sewerage infrastructures.

Visiting the construction sites of Bacha Khan and Tipu Sultan flyovers on Sunday, City Administrator Fazlur Rehman took serious note of the slow construction pace at the flyovers and issued a warning to the contractors to complete the construction.

Noticing hold of construction at Bacha Khan flyover owing to non-payment of approximately Rs 60 million to the contractor, Rehman ordered immediate payment of Rs 20 million to complete the remaining works on time.

He directed the CDGK works and services executive district officer Rasheed Mughal to expedite the construction of link roads and storm water drains near the flyover. He further directed him that necessary legal action should be initiated against the construction firms if they fail to improve.
