KARACHI – The annual prize distribution ceremony of Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Beach View Club was held at the Club’s Sports Complex on Monday.
Legendary wicketkeeper and former captain of Pakistan cricket team Moin Khan was the chief guest on the occasion. Former national tennis champion Saeed Mir also attended the function.
Addressing the gathering, Moin Khan underscored the significance of sports in making a healthy, vibrant and tolerant society. He said that a healthy body had a healthy mind. He added that sports go a long way in enhancing team spirit, self esteem, confidence and discipline in an individual.
He said that the DHA provided tremendous sports facilities to its residents and its different clubs were playing a pivotal role in not only promoting sports but also in enhancing healthy attitudes and positive thinking among the members. Earlier, secretary Da Beach View Club Lt Col (retd) Tahir, in his address, said that sports in addition to enhancing mental and physical development of body also helped in producing skills, perseverance and agility in human personality which is the cornerstone of success in life.
He said the members of the club of all ages warmly participated in various sports competition held from July 20 to August 15, 2010 which was a positive sign for developing a healthy society. He added that the annual sports competitions which included swimming, squash, tennis, table tennis and badminton were held on knock out basis.
In tennis (men’s open) Sikander Hayat clinched the title defeating Bilal Raza Sharif (6-3, 6-2, 6-0).
Men’s open squash was won by Ali Mansoor who defeated Saad Sohail (15-3, 15-9, 15-7) in the finals. In squash (veterans) Shoukat Riaz emerged as champion while Farrukh Hanif was runner-up.
In swimming men’s open 50-metre free style, Haris Abid (29.86 seconds) was the champion. In swimming (ladies open) 50-metre free style, the title was clinched by Maha Afroz (31.27 seconds) while Minah Zaheer was runner-up.
Swimming (girls u-14) 50-meter free style was won by Mahah Asad while Fatima and Feryal Raza Sharif got second and third positions respectively.
In badminton (men’s open), Awais Ilyas defeated Naseem Ahmed (15-8, 15-10) in the finals while in badminton (girls u-18), Samia Shaukat clinched the title defeating Warisha Ilyas (15-8, 15-9).
Omair Shahid won the boys badminton (u-18 years) event while Awais Ilyas was runner-up. Badminton (veterans) was won by Sohail Muzaffar while Saleem Shaikh was runner-up.
