ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Monday passed the National Disaster Management Bill 2010 to provide for establishment of the National Disaster Management System in the country.

The act will help regulate the national disaster management system to overcome unforeseen crisis. Under the new law, the federal government will establish the National Disaster Management Commission, which will be headed by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani. Leader of the opposition in the National Assembly and the Senate will be members of the commission.

The federal government will also establish a National Disaster Management Authority, National Institute of Disaster Management and National Disaster Response Force. Provinces will establish their own disaster management commissions. They would also set up a district disaster management authorities. Adviser to Prime Minister Nawabzada Ghazanfar Ali Gul presented before the House two bills. The bills titled “The Sacked Employees (reinstatement) Bill 2010” and “The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (Amendment) Bill 2007” were passed by the House. The first bill was aimed at providing relief to employees of corporations, autonomous or semi-autonomous bodies and government servants who were dismissed, removed or terminated from service. Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervez Ashraf introduced a bill for establishment of the Private Power and Infrastructure Board.
