ISLAMABAD – Pakistan People’s Party leadership once again has expressed its resolve to continue work for strengthening of the democratic institutions and would not let anti-democracy forces derail the incumbent political dispensation.
The resolve was made during a meeting of PPP Parliamentarians from both the Houses held Monday. The meeting, jointly chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, discussed the overall political situation in the country, the rehabilitation of the flood-affected people and other matters facing the government.
On the occasion, it was decided in principle that the NRO beneficiaries would be shown the door except those who had already approached the relevant courts for relief.
Sources in the government informed TheNation that a list of NRO beneficiaries, who are holding public office, would be asked to step down and first get themselves cleared from the court of law and this process would start in next few days.
These sources further said that a list of such persons, including those holding offices in Pakistani missions abroad, was presented to the Prime Minister on Sunday night and it was about to be released but later the matter was deferred due to some unknown reasons.
The sources further said that during the meeting of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani with President Zardari prior to their meeting with Chief of Army Staff the list of NRO beneficiaries was discussed threadbare and few names were dropped out of the list.
It was further decided in the meeting that all those public office holders including cabinet members, who had already approached the courts to get themselves cleared of the charges, would be dropped out of the list and their matter would be decided in the light of the court verdict later.
The sources in the party said that the move was aimed at releasing the mounting pressure on President Asif Ali Zardari, who is also one of the NRO beneficiaries.
