* ECP issues last notice to parliamentarians to appear before commission on Sept 6

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission on Monday facilitated alleged fake degree-holders with another chance to explain their position in September.

Nine members of the Senate and national and provincial assemblies had been summoned by the commission on Monday, some among them appeared personally or through their counsels except a few, who did not turn up even after a second call for appearance.

“By using delaying tactics, people think they are buying time. But, actually they are wasting time,” said Joint Secretary Afzal Khan, commenting when the name of Salman Mohsin Gilani was called and he was not present.

Afzal is a senior official of the commission who also chaired the special committee constituted by the EC chief on the directive of the SC to supervise the degrees issue.

“If anybody’s document is genuine, it is genuine for all reasons and for all times. Why do they hesitate to appear before this forum and plead their case,” he asked, directing to issue a last notice to MPA Gulistan Khan and repeat notice to Hamayun Aziz Kurd for both to appear on September 6.

The committee conducted the hearing with regards to the case of Syed Javed Hasnain, who claimed to have a genuine degree of a seminary in Bannu.
