Widening of Islamabad Highway would be completed by December, making it the only five-lane road of the country, said the CDA official here Thursday.

Work on the project is going on at rapid pace contrary to the CDA's other projects, which could not be completed within stipulated time.

Commuters, who usually suffer during the CDA road projects, described the speedy construction of projects with the courtesy of the frequent movement of VIPs on the highway plying between the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

The authority has hired the services of the contractor M/s Maaksons to execute the project at cost of Rs1 billion. Under the project, two rigid lanes of 12 feet each would be added from Koral Chowk to Faizabad. Maximum work has already been completed, while the rest of the portion would be completed by December.

Asif Javed, a telecom engineer told this agency that had it been any other road, it would have taken several months to reach this point. It would be better if the authority maintains this speed, he added.

The project was initiated in February this year and more than half of the project has already been completed.

A CDA official told this scribe that the addition of two rigid lanes on Islamabad Highway is meant for heavy traffic that often causes rutting on the main highway.
