LAHORE - Sunni Ittehad Council, a group of about two-dozen religious parties from Barelvi school of thought, has given a call for complete shutterdown and peaceful protests on Saturday (today). The decision was taken at a meeting held here at Jamia Naeemia after Friday prayers.
Briefing the newsmen after a detailed consultation in the Council meeting, MNA Sahibzada Fazle Karim, who is also head of his faction of JUP, said the Government in Punjab was playing in the hands of terrorists while the federal government was hostage to a religious party acting as political blackmailers abetting those who occupy mosques of Sunnis to turn those into terrorists camps. He warned of direct action against the rulers if government failed to get rid of terrorists at political level and break their network in the country within ten days, adding that government had no writ in the country and had no right to rule. He said a countrywide convention of all Sunni parties would be convened soon to decide future line of action. He said the meeting also demanded expulsion of a ruling coalition partner at the centre involved in abetting occupation on mosques of other schools of thought.
Former federal minister Haji Hanif Tayyab criticized ‘certain elements’ in the electronic media for allegedly making provoking speeches against shrines of saints, and demanded they should also be taken to task. He also accused Jamaat ud Dawa of having links with extremists, and demanded taking back millions of rupees of government and private funds from it, adding that its funding was done at the behest of the United States. He demanded strict action against the banned outfits accusing the rulers of allowing them to work under new names. He said that the same elements who had attacked the Rehman Baba’s shrine in the Khyber PK were involved in the Lahore incident. He also accused Punjab government of covering up of a big cache of arms seized from a Raiwind locality.
