THE Punjab government has decided in principle to construct an elevated expressway from Babu Sabu Interchange to Niazi Chowk.

Similarly, improvement of Kalma Chowk and Bhatta Chowk will also start shortly as the process of provision of alternate routes and survey work is in progress.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Sunday chaired a high-level meeting presided over by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat. The meeting reviewed the pace of work of various development projects.

Addressing the meeting, the CM said that all resources were being used for speedy development of the province and provision of basic amenities to the masses and uplift projects worth billions of rupees were being executed. He said transparent utilisation of every penny of public money was being ensured and a high standard of construction work was being maintained which was comparable with any developed country.

He said that the Lahore Ring Road was evolved by PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif but after the toppling of his democratic government, the project was shelved and served only as a source of property business. He said that ring roads were always constructed outside cities but the former government made a flawed planning and passed this road from Babu Sabu to Niazi Chowk through congested areas which could result in accidents.

He said life of every citizen was dear to him therefore, it has been decided to construct an elevated expressway from Babu Sabu Interchange to Niazi Chowk. He said that this project will be started from next financial year. He directed that the project should be finalized and presented to him at the earliest. He directed that planning should also be made for linking Lahore Ring Road Package 17 with Ferozepur Road.

He said planning should also be made for provision of alternate routes for the improvement of Kalma Chowk while survey work for uplift of Bhatta Chowk should also be completed as early as possible. He said that encroached state land will be retrieved at any cost for its utilization for public-welfare projects. He directed that all development projects should be completed within timeframe.

Matters of mutual interest were discussed in the meeting. Former Principal Officer of American Consulate Brain D Hunt was also present.

The CM was speaking at a meeting on education at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat on Sunday. The CM said the government was making sincere and determined efforts for promotion of education in the province as the dream of progress and development could not materialise without eliminating illiteracy and ignorance.The CM said measures taken by the government for the uplift of education sector had started yielding positive results. He said the Punjab government was paying attention on development of education sector and revolutionary measures taken in this regard had started yieldin ecouraging result. He said that besides traditional education, due attention is also being paid on promotion of modern technology and equipping the youth with latest knowledge.

He said setting up of Punjab Educational Endowment Fund is a revolutionary step of the government for providing an opportunity to poor students to continue their studies. He said that education institution like LUMS had also been included in this programme whereas five students will be sent to Ivy League universities this year to study subjects not taught in local educational institutions.

The CM said that Pakistan had vast natural resources and the nature has blessed it with abundant coal and water reserves as well as diverse seasons but these resources were not developed in the past due to which Pakistan was facing serious energy crisis which was badly affecting education, health, industries, agriculture and other sectors. He said strenuous and determined efforts were being made by the government for the speedy development of the province and uplift of education sector.

The CM ordered authorities to set up a committee headed by Dr Zafar Iqbal Qureshi to review education through television and submit its report within 10 days.

Govt to convene energy conference this month: CM: PUNJAB Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that an energy conference would be convened this month to tackle energy crisis.

Talking to reporters at Allama Iqbal International Airport on his return from London, the CM said the government will also invite foreign investors to attend the conference. He said the federal government should take all possible measures to resolve energy crisis as early as possible.
