CHIEF Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that the Ferozepur Road will be converted into a model road and practical work in this regard has started.

Addressing a meeting regarding uplift of the road on Monday, Shahbaz said the project for the improvement of 17-km long portion of the Ferozepur Road from the Qurtaba Road to Chungi Amar Sidhu was being implemented expeditiously and 14 different departments were engaged in the project. He said traffic management, lane marking, service roads, footpaths, bus stops, tree planting and landscaping besides other requirements would be fulfilled and later the model would be replicated for the improvement of other roads of the City.

The CM said a report should also be submitted to him regarding metered parking on the Ferozepur Road on the pattern of The Mall and Gulberg. He said people were facing serious parking problems at markets and shopping plazas, therefore, the number of the proposed parking plazas should be increased to 12, including two parking plazas in the Walled City, adding that a report should be submitted to him after identifying suitable spots for the purpose. He said a better transport system should be arranged at the Ferozepur Road for the convenience of people and a satellite system should be used for monitoring the performance of officials of different department deputed on the road. He said that he would personally inspect the uplift project of the road at the end of the current month. The chief minister said that in addition to construction of footpaths, modern bus stands and pedestrian bridges, maximum trees should be planted along the Ferozepur Road for its beautification and provision of a better atmosphere to the citizens. He directed the officials concerned to remove encroachments from the road and the policy regarding road cuts should be strictly implemented without succumbing to any pressure. He said additional resources were of vital importance for the welfare projects and the district coordination officer should submit a plan in this regard.

Shahbaz said that besides completion of the Park & Ride project in Gulberg, the departments concerned should also provide other necessary facilities, including shuttle bus service, and a plan should be evolved for providing information to the public regarding its timing and other matters. He said the Kalma Chowk improvement project should be started at the earliest and measures should also be taken on an emergent basis for the improvement of the drainage system near the General Hospital.

scholar: Religious scholar and Naib Mohtamim of the Jamia Ashrafia, Maulana Fazalur Rahim, called on Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif on Monday. The chief minister said there was a need for national unity to counter challenges.
